I’m super excited about a very specific new brand of hand dyed yarns: it’s Tricô Tricô (as “Knit Knit”). One of the reasons is for that is the exquisite colors on the top 100% wool yarns. You can take a look here and see for yourself !

The other aspect that has inspired me to design Izabel shawl & shawlette and Tashi beanie, is the fact that my dear friend Sandra Baroni has started this business as the entrepreneur behind Tricô Tricô yarns.

Last November we met in Curitiba, where I had the pleasure of leading two workshops at Tricota Curitiba – Workshop Series. (I’ve already mentioned how Curitiba’s knitters are one of a kind and welcoming people, right? I’m sorry that I’m being repetitive, but when I’m among this group of knitter friends, life is really better!). We chatted a bit and Sandra, who primarily works with internet technology, shared about her will power / internal call do to something related with the art of knitting, beauty and so on.

Turns out that only a few months after our little chat, she made it real. She did it …big time! Sandra has a refined taste for colors. All shades are truly beautiful. The 100% wool yarns are high quality and extremely pleasant to touch and work with. We can perceive her care to create a new brand that knitters will truly appreciate and also be grateful, because we don’t have many pure wool brands in our country.

With that said, I would only like to share that I felt her powerful solo flight towards inner and outer nourishment by beauty. I’m glad to witness this. So everything comes together, in forms of butterflies, wings, delicate curves on a background of lines representing our inner strength to be able to transform, to fly, to make things better and more beautiful in our life and also positively affecting others lives… as a shawlette & shawl Izabel (as my great grandmother, that has changed her and our lives when she moved from Piauí to Rio de Janeiro. This happened in the early 1900s as she has crossed the country with 2 little girls on a donkey. Izabel also as a precious friend that embraces everybody – I mean everybody – with compassion and grace.)

Starting to knit a stylized butterfly on the back neck (in my imagination is like a “tattoo” for women that cultivate the delicateness of inner strength – all of us, of course!), we keep working back and forth, along three triangles and four columns full of wings and simple cables

. The final border is like a celebration, full of my imaginary wings, curves, and a lacy edge.

After my imaginary mantle of positive energy, I felt that it was time to embellish heads. Still in my phase of delicate cables and curves, Tashi beanie came out as a lacy crown for passionate and brave minds. (Again, ourselves – of course ). I sincerely hope that you can see little bows formed by the cables on the rib and the sun flower on the top of the head formed by the decreasing work, as I see! Lace, flowers and bows dressing those women’s heads…

I would like to thank some VIP friends & family that I’m lucky enough to have around supporting everything that I came up with: the gorgeous models Mari and Prisca (daughter and “as a daughter”) that always creates time to, not only for modeling, but also for carry the gear and go to any place that I’ve dreamed about it having lots of fun; a creative knitting designer and friend that have eagle eyes and a kind heart, Leticia Cinto (the best tech editor ever); another creative designer/journalist and precious friend, Iris Alessi, that even launching a new website about what is hot in the yarn world – Informação em Ponto, also found time to help with the portuguese version of Izabel; Sandra Baroni, the heart and intelect behind Tricô Tricô Yarns that has picked me to fly with her and Bel Comenero, one of the Izabel’s that makes the world a better place for test knitting. My deepest thank also goes to my dear aunties, cousins and special and “golden” friends that have this unique way to make me feel loved and supported. And once that I’m on this vibe of gratitude, a special thank to Oscar Niemeyer the magician that designed the photo’s location – the Modern Art Museum in Rio and (why not?) George Harrison, which songs have been playing non-stop on my gadgets since I’ve started those projects!

I’m also thrilled to announce that Izabel and Tashi are part of Tricô Tricô Yarn Club launching! Starting today until next Jun 9th, both designs will be exclusively offered for people that wants to be part of the new Yarn Club.
Tools / Notions:

6 sts markers

2 pieces of scrap yarn

Darning needle

T pins for blocking

Notes:

- There’s a lot of “action” going on with the stitches on the wrong side (WS) rows. I would like to suggest that you check key before starting the project!

Details of Tashi

Materials: 194 (212, 229) yds of fingering yarn

Sample shown in TricôTricô Fingering yarn (hand painted 100% merino wool single ply – 100gr = 440 yds) – color 03 Chá Verde – size Adult Small

Gauge: 20 sts and 16 rows = 2.25” X 1.75” on the Rib st pattern worked circular (2 repetitions of chart rounds 1 to 16)

Sizes:

Children & Adult Small: 19” / 20” head circumference

Adult Medium: 21” / 22” head circumference

Adult Large: 23” head circumference

Needles:

US2 / 3mm (or size to obtain gauge) 16” circular needles or longer for magic loop method

*** If you tend to be a tight knitter, I would recommend one size bigger needles for casting-on and work the first round.

One set of US2 / 3mm DPNs (or size to obtain gauge)

Cable needle suitable for the needle size

Tools / Notions:

11 (12, 13) stitch markers (stitch markers are optional. They can be helpful when placed between chart repetitions)

*** I would recommend the stitch marker placed at the beginning of the work looks different from the others. This st marker indicates the beginning of a new round.

Darning needle

Notes:

Tashi is worked circular and from the bottom-up. The rib with cables stitch creates a snug fit and negative ease.

If you like the beanie more slouchy, repeat chart rounds 27 to 46 three or four times.

The Brazilian knitting community used to carry out meetings which led to the 1st Brazilian Knitting Congress in Curitiba last year. Well…they are doing it again and, next June in São Paulo, we are going to have another weekend full of knitting experiences!

In my opinion, knitting is really not a traditional craft in Brazil. A knitter in certain parts of my country could even think that he or she was alone in this craft some years ago. And then, just like any other important moment in history, there are always people that stand up for something that they love and a few years ago, some brazilian knitters have started internet communities and creating meetings in public places. Ravelry has also brought us closer together.

Today there’s a bunch of online groups, Facebook groups, with people that meet every week or month, sharing experiences, knitting together for fun, for charity. Small groups, big groups, people knitting alone at home but chatting with other knitters online. Some of us are creating their own knitting-related business, some are designing, and some have such a big heart and do wonderful things for charity and some have this adventurous spirit and are passionate enough to organize a knitting congress in Brazil.

A Brazilian Knitting Congress is an opportunity to meet in person the friends that we have been making online, meet again others (internet is fantastic, but being with a friend in person is another level of experience, right?!), learn and share, check (and buy <3!!!) new yarns, needles and notions from the seller at the market place, laughing out loud, feeling the experience of being part of a national community related with something that we appreciate and love and be tremendously happy during a whole weekend!

I’ll be there – for sure! Actually, I’m thrilled with the invitation for 3 workshops!

June 22 / Saturday – 2 to 5:30pm

Design your own shawl: Exploring the triangular shawl.

Class geared towards people that like knitting shawls and want to learn how to design your own pieces. In this workshop, we will address issues relevant to the conception and design, exploring the mechanics and calculations for shawls with triangular structure (with 2, 3 or 4 triangles).

June 23 / Sunday – 8:30 to 11:30am

Design your own shawl: Half moon shape – Two ways for shaping with short rows

Class geared towards people that like knitting shawls and want to learn how to design your own pieces. In this workshop we will test two half moon shaped shawls, exploring the mechanics and calculation for a Lacy border.

June 23 / Sunday – 2 to 5:30pm

Shaping a cardigan/pullover for your body

In this workshop we will get to know our own measurements, understanding the patterns and modifying them to enhance our shapes and dress well.

How many times do we fall in love with a pattern, we put up time and money knitting with the yarn of our dreams and the result is frustrating? In this workshop, we will take our measurements and learn how to choose correctly the size of the pattern, identifying which alterations are needed in order for it to suit us well, enhancing some shapes and softening others.

The 2nd Brazilian Knitting Congress will be held in São Paulo, from the 21 to 23 of June. The event website is http://www.congressobrasileirodetrico.com.br/.

Hope I can meet you there!

Peace, Knit and Love…always! Paula

Here you can see how it will look like after we built the band:

one side

other side

With US 4 / 3.5mm needles and starting from the top to the end in rib finishing, pick up and knit 97 [97, 97, 106, 106, 115, 115] sts along the inside edge formed by knitting sts (WS) right before the purl sts from the button band cover.
K 2 rows.
Buttonhole Row: K3, [BO 2 sts, K 8 [8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10] sts] 9 times, BO 2 sts, K2 sts.
Next Row: K3, [CO 2 sts, K 8 [8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10] sts] 9 times, CO 2 sts, K2 sts.
K2 more rows.
BO.

Now I would like to suggest a finishing detail that might add extra cuteness to your cardigan! We are going to sew a decorative (and fun, and adorable…) ribbon behind the left side button band, where the buttons will be sewed. For this charming detail we will need 19, 5 (19, 5, 19, 5, 21, 21, 23, 23) inches of 1,5 wide ribbon of your choice.

Actually this idea has started at at fun chat before a Ragga Eiríksdóttir workshop, received a precious contribution from Adrienne Almeida and our Brooklyn Craft Tour and became reality during the Icelandic Night chat with some of my dear brazilian friends!

Hand stitch as you like or use a fancy embroidery stitch for your hand sewing. The whole idea is to make your Cecilia cardigan prettier and unique and that you can have fun in the process, appreciating what you are accomplishing!

You can use a suitable thread or even one ply of your yarn. I particularly love this idea!

Pin the ribbon along the button band before hand sewing.

Finishing
Weave in ends and close underarm holes.
Sew the buttons at the button band on left side, inside of the small depressions created by the stitches to avoid extra volume at the bands.
Block the collar (I suggest blocking the collar separately).
Block body and sleeves to measurements given in schematic. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
*** The sleeve’s chart motif must to be strongly blocked.

You can dress your Cecilia open and casual, with your unique ribbon detail discreetly showing off…:)

You can dress it buttoned creating another look…

But I sincerely hope that you feel joy and appreciate your work while knitting Cecilia Cardigan!

Thank you, a thousand times Thank you for you participation on our double KAL – Cecilia Niemeyer! It was a blast for us!

A few KAL participants and I have just finished a Google Hangout about bust darts and I’m thrilled about how much fun we had! We have chatted about not only bust darts, but also about button bands (a cute idea came out for next week!) and blocking as we enjoyed Yone’s grandson Emanuel showing up after his first day at school! An inspiring night before our next clue!We are almost done with our Cecilia Cardigan! Let’s finish the sleeves?!

Sleeves (same instructions for both)
Transfer 58 [60, 64, 66, 66, 68, 70] held sleeve sts to dpns [or use desired method for knitting circular sleeves]. Beginning at the center of the underarm, attach the yarn and pick up and purl 1 [3, 3, 6, 8, 10, 13] sts, P58 [60, 64, 66, 66, 68, 70] sleeve sts, pick up and purl 1 [3, 3, 6, 8, 10, 13] sts also from the underarm. Place a marker and join the work.
You will have 60 [66, 70, 78, 82, 88, 96] sts on the needle.
Work 1 [1, 2, 1, 11, 5, 19] even rounds in Reverse Stockinette st.
Decrease Round: P1, SSP, P until last 3 sts before marker, P2tog, P1. [2 sts decreased]
Repeat the Decrease Round every 8 [7, 7, 6, 5, 5, 4] th round for 12 [14, 14, 17, 19, 21, 24] times.
You will have 34 [36, 40, 42, 42, 44, 46] sts on the needles.
Sleeve cuff

***The chart and written instructions for the lace motif are at the end of the pattern pdf – right after the collar charts!
Round 1 to 14: Work 1 x 1 Rib over 6 [7, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12] sts, work Cuff Sleeve Chart over 22 sts [all sizes], work 1 x 1 Rib over 6 [7, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12] sts.
Note:
- We will work with two BO methods: one for the ribbing and the other over the chart motif.

BO loosely in ribbing [knitting the knit sts and purling the purl sts] over 6 [7, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12] sts; BO loosely over 22 sts as follows: K2 * return both stitches to left needle and K2 together through the back of the loop, K1, repeat from * until all stitches have been bound off; BO loosely in ribbing [knitting the knit sts and purling the purl sts] over 6 [7, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12] sts.

See you next week with a cute suggestion for finishing your Cecilia Cardigan with a twist!

Peace Knit and Love as much as possible!

And there we are at Week 2 of Cecilia Niemeyer KAL! And I would really like to ask for your help!

Dear KAL participant, if you are knitting Cecilia Cardigan I would love to have your support on sharing your project on Ravelry! This effort will be truly appreciated! Thank you!

Nobody asked me about bust darts, however I’m still game for any questions and calculations! Please feel free to write here on the comments or email me at paula@peaceknirlove.com!

Basically what we have to figure out is how much fabric we need to create with short rows as demonstrated on the illustration!

Shaping waist

***If for any reason you don’t like or don’t want to shape the waist, skip the whole “Shaping waist” section and work rows 3 and 4 for 23 [23, 23, 23, 24, 24, 24] times. [total 46 [46, 46, 46, 48, 48, 48] rows].
Decrease Row 1 [RS]: K2, P4, K2, slm, [P until 3 sts before marker, P2tog, K1, slm, K1, SSP] twice, P until marker, slm, K5, P1, K5, wyib sl 1 st purlwise. [4 sts decreased]
Rows 2, 4 and 6 [WS]: P6, K1, P5, slm, [K until 1 st before marker, P1, slm, P1] twice, K to marker, slm, P2, K4, wyif sl 2 sts purlwise.
Rows 3 and 5: K2, P4, K2, slm, [P until 1 st before marker, K1, slm, K1] twice, P to marker, slm, K5, P1, K5, wyib sl 1 st purlwise.
Repeat Rows 1 to 6 twice more. [12 sts decreased]
You will have 172 [192, 212, 244, 272, 300, 332] sts on the needle.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 twice more [4 rows].
Increase Row 1 [RS]: K2, P4, K2, slm, [P until 2 sts before marker, Pfb, K1, slm, K1, Pfb] twice, P until marker, slm, K5, P1, K5, wyib sl 1 st purlwise. [4 sts increased]
Rows 2, 4 and 6 [WS]: P6, K1, P5, slm, [K until 1 st before marker, P1, slm, P1] twice, K to marker, slm, P2, K4, wyif sl 2 sts purlwise.
Rows 3 and 5: K2, P4, K2, slm, [P until 1 st before marker, K1, slm, K1] twice, P to marker, slm, K5, P1, K5, wyib sl 1 st purlwise.
Repeat Rows 1 to 6 twice more. [12 sts increased]
You will have 184 [204, 224, 256, 284, 312, 344] sts on the needle.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 more 3 [3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4] times. [total 6 [6, 6, 6, 8, 8, 8] rows]
Finishing body
Note:
- Change needles for smaller size.
- Side seam markers must be removed.
Row 1 [RS]: K2, P4, K2, slm, *[K1, P1] repeat from * to last marker, slm, K5, P1, K5, wyib sl 1 st purlwise.
Row 2 [WS]: P6, K1, P5, slm, *[P1, K1] repeat from * to last marker, slm, P2, K4, wyif sl 2 sts purlwise.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 more 8 times [9 times total].
BO loosely in ribbing [knitting the knit sts and purling the purl sts].

I hope that you have a great weekend (for us in Brazil is Carnaval – the most expected holiday of the year!)

Let’s start shall we? Now that we have already swatched and found the perfect yarn & needles, let’s choose our size?

This is the pattern information about sizes:

SIZE
XS [S, M, L, 1X, 2X, 3X] shown in size M
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Chest: 32.5 [36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56] inches
Length: 18.5 [19, 19.5, 20, 20.5, 21, 21.5] inches
Note: For fit as shown, choose the size that matches your bust measurements.

We always recommend that you ask a friend to take your measurements, specially at bust line. (When we do this by ourselves, the results are not that accurate!). However, most of the patterns are sized for cup B bust, and if your cup is higher than that, I would like to suggest some things so you can knit a garment that flatters your body.

- Ask a friend to help you taking your measurements: bust line, upper arm, waist and lower waist. It’s recommended that you wear your regular brassiere, well adjusted!

- With this 4 numbers, take a look at the schematics, check if the garment has positive, negative or no ease, and make your size choice.

- It’s possible that when your bust line matches a size, the other measurements are too big, This means that you probably have a bust cup higher or too smaller than B. I would like to suggest that you ask your friend to measure right under your armpits, parallel with the bust line. Consider this number as your bust line for size choice purpose.

It’s very possible that the others measurements (upper arm, waist and lower waist) will match your new choice of size, and your raglan will be on the right place, flattering your body! If you have a cup higher than B, we can figure out together (or you can do it by yourself, if you find it best) how many short rows we will need to create bust darts for your cup size. A good time to start bust darts is when we already worked about 1, 5 to 2 inches from the underarm.

Are you good with your size choice now?!

Now it’s a wonderful time to read the notes and understand how the garment is worked and be aware of details.

PATTERN NOTES
This sweater is worked top-down and back and forth. The sleeves are worked in the round.
Begin working the lacy collar, followed by shaping the back neck with short rows and working the yoke and body in Reverse Stockinette stitch until the rib 1 x 1 finishing.
There are 3 collar’s charts for each cardigan size (center, right and left sides).
After the short rows shaping, the collar folds back and the Row 22 becomes a RS row.
The sleeves are also worked in Reverse Stockinette stitch in circular. The cuffs are worked in 1 x 1 ribbing and a lace panel.
The instructions at the beginning and at the end of all the rows along the collar yoke and body (except the ones from the short rows shaping), builds an I-cord finishing along the edges.
On the body there will be 2 columns formed by knit stitches (RS) and purl stitches (WS) on each side, like if they were seams.
After the collar and along the yoke and body, two button bands are worked along the cardigan. At one we will sew the buttons, the other will cover them and a third one is worked when the piece is finished, picking up stitches from the inside (WS).

Let’s take a few more minutes to check the Abbreviations and Stitches used on the pattern, so the work can flow !

Abbreviations:

Now it’s cast-on time! Yay! How exciting is this moment for knitters!

As specified on the notes, we start at the edge of the lacy collar and keep working towards the neck. When finishing the collar chart, we will work a few short rows in garter stitch for a better fit and perfect folder over the shoulders. And, without seaming, we will be casting on a few stitches at the beginning of the two next rows for button band and cover, already working on the raglan!

So….hands on! Cast-on and have fun!

*** All the charts are at the end of the pdf, so you can print only the ones from your size! Because of lack of space, they are not here, but you can download the full pattern HERE at Ravelry!

We will be starting our “double” KAL – Cecilia Niemeyer tomorrow! Yay! How about taking some time to swatch and check your gauge today? If you are substituting yarn, I would suggest you to check the yarn composition. The yarn used on the sample is 100% superwash wool and behaves differently than other fibers. Just keep in mind that a cottony, or silky etc yarn will drape differently than a wooly yarn.

Swatch for gauge: This is an important subject for knitters! Usually we are so excited to start a new project that the idea to knit a swatch sounds like a major step back! Actually it is not – I swear! Spending some time swatching, washing your sample and measuring will save us not only from ripping out the work a thousand times, but will also prevent the major frustration of finishing a project that it’s too big or too small. if the piece does not suit us well, we can always pass it away as a gift, which is nice. But if you invest a good amount of money and time working on a project that you really like, maybe it will be better to end it happy with the result and wearing it proud of yourself!

What is good size for a swatch? There are thousand of different opinions about this. If you have your own method and it works, please go forward with it! If you care for a suggestion, I cast on 3 times the stitches suggested on the gauge and also knit 3 times of the row gauge. Cecilia Cardigan gauge is 20 sts and 28 rows in 4 x 4″ stockinette st. For this project’s swatch, I cast on 60 sts and knit along 84 rows. Maybe you are thinking “Why so much??”. As a knitter, I feel that my tension while I cast-on and work on the first rows is different than my tencion when I’m knitting after 30 min. just as well, my tension changes when I’m almost finishing, speeding it up to bind-off. With that in mind, this particularly bigger sample size works really well when I’m taking measurements from the center, where the tension it’s similar to the one when I’m working on the piece.

So, I would like to suggest that you take a few hours to swatch, take measurements, change needles and swatch again (if necessary), take measurements again and again. When you reach the suggested gauge, wash you sample. I like to leave the sample to dry without pinning, just using my hands to smoothly place it flat. After being dried, I like to hang for a while and take measurements again to check how the yarn will behave. Maybe you realize that you need to change for smaller needles to compensate the drape, maybe it’s a wooly yarn that does not stretch so much and you are good with it…Anyway, the goal is to avoid unpleasant surprise at the end of your project!

Let’s make some swatches? Yayyy!!!

See U tomorrow!

Peace Knit & Love…always!

A KAL with a name and last name? Yeap! With 2 projects and lots of fun as well!

Here in Brazil we have a knitting community that is very supportive! We live on a huge country but thanks to the internet, we manage to talk almost every day!

And as a community we are very supportive with each other. This friendship was the seed for this fun KAL that will start on February 1st here at peaceknitlove.com and at flordelis.com! Last December I’ve launched Cecilia cardigan while my dear friend Iris Alessi launched the beautiful Niemeyer shawl and we both are looking forward to the opportunity to have a fun KAL with other knitters! So, we’ve talked and the idea of “Cecilia Niemeyer KAL” naturally came up! First of all we laughed at lot at this idea of it being named after a person’s full name, but also because in Brazil now is summer and super warm (seriously…we are melting!!!) and we decided to evoke the cold weather by knitting two essential wardrobe pieces!

We love to have you on this “double” KAL! Please, join us on this fun journey!

Starting next Feb 1st, every Friday we will be posting pictures, videos or written instructions about techniques and or suggestions to go through these lovely projects! We also would love to have your pictures along the process (even if they are simple and fast cell phone pictures) on our “Cecilia Niemeyer Galeria”!

Until the Friday Premier (LOL!), we would love to know what yarn you have in mind, in which color (OMG! This is such a wonderful part of it!)! Please, feel free to make contact with us on the blog comments or by email! We will love to know about your plans!

Both designs are free and are available at Ravelry:
